Delayed Soybean
Planting - Do Not Make Drastic Management Changes
Field conditions are quite variable across
Northwest Minnesota this spring.
Using
Reduced Herbicide Rates for Wild Oat Control
Herbicides are registered at application rates that
are adequate for good weed control under a wide variety of
conditions. When conditions are favorable for herbicide
activity, however, lower application rates (below labeled
rates) will often provide good weed control at a reduced
price.
Are Below Labeled Rates Legal?
A herbicide user can legally choose a rate lower
than listed on the herbicide rate unless the label
specifically prohibits application rates that are less
than what is listed on the label.
Potato
Leafhoppers in Alfalfa
Potato Leafhopper (PLH) is perhaps the most common insect
pest in alfalfa. Potato leafhoppers cause damage by
piercing the stem and underside of the leaf with its
stylet and feeding on plant sap.

Wet Soils
and Denitrification
Denitrification is a microbiological process through which
nitrogen, usually in the form of NO3-, is returned from
the soil to the atmosphere. As a result of the recent
rainfall, particularly in northwest Minnesota, some
discussion has been generated concerning possible
denitrification in the soils
Cold, Wet
Soil and Herbicides
For those who have applied preplant incorporated or
preemergence herbicides, there isn’t any doubt the
compounds have had enough rainfall to be activated. An
appropriate question to ask now, however, is has this
weather increased the risk for crop injury from the soil
applied herbicides?
How Cold
Is too Cold for Small Grains to Develop?
The month of May will enter the record books as the
coldest ever recorded for the region. What does this mean
for crop growth and development?
