Rust Update
Soybean rust has not been detected in Minnesota in 2009. Other
foliar diseases have generally been slow to develop in Minnesota so
far this year. Soybean rust has been detected only in the gulf coast
states as of mid July.
Fungus
Tapped to Take on Kudzu
Kudzu,
"The Vine that Ate the South," could meet its match in a naturally
occurring fungus that Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists
have formulated as a biologically based herbicide.
Corn Growing Degree Days (GDD)
Lots of news articles commenting about weather, cool conditions, and
the delays it creates for crop development. We know last year
created difficulties for crop development and maturity in the fall.
Unfortunately, 2009 is tracking very similar to last season.
Single-Generation European Corn Borer Delayed
Cool temperatures delay the crop and slow down insect development.
As last year, corn borer emergence, egg laying, and hatching are
being delayed into mid July and August, at least 10 days later than
if temperatures were normal.
Corn Leaf Aphid:
Are they a concern ?
Corn leaf aphids can be found in NW MN and ND corn every year, but
economic losses in the region have not been associated with these
infestations. In other corn producing states it is rare that losses
are associated with the aphids, either.
Soybean Aphid Speed Scouting:
An Overview
It is that time again to focus on soybean aphid scouting. It is also
the time I like to promote the scouting procedure called
“Speed Scouting” by the
researchers who developed it. The method speeds up making decisions
on whether to treat or not based on the aphid’s population
distribution in the field when the
treatment threshold of 250 aphids per plant and 80% of the plants
with these levels is
reached.
